Description

On Wikipedia, the "Taiwanese bag" is defined as follows: 
"The Taiwanese bag, originally named 'ka-tsì' (台羅: ka-tsì, pronounced similarly to 'ㄍㄚ ㄐㄧ'), also known as '加薦仔', '茭薦仔', '茄芷袋', or 'retro bag', is a type of traditional hand-held bag from Taiwan. It is slightly wider at the top than at the bottom and can be used as a backpack, document bag, or handbag. The name comes from the Japanese term 'かぎ編み (kagiami)', which refers to its weaving technique.

The Taiwanese bag is said to have originated in the Jingliao Village of the Houbi District in Tainan City. It was initially handmade from rattan and was called '草袋仔' (grass bag). With the industrialization of Taiwan, it was later changed to a semi-transparent handbag made from nylon mesh."

 

There has always been varying opinions on what this bag should be called. Currently, most government agencies and private organizations in Taiwan refer to it as "Qie Zhi Bag." However, there has been discussion online suggesting that "Jia Ju" (葭苴) should be the correct name. The character "Jia" represents newly sprouted reeds, while "Ju" refers to the grass mats that were historically used as insoles in shoes. These two characters are more closely related to the original material used to make the Qie Zhi Bag—lan grass. The term "Qie Zhi Bag" is merely a phonetic adaptation for easier reading and writing.


Abroad, the Japanese call the Qie Zhi Bag "Yoshi Bag," meaning a bag used by fishermen. It is said that the material of the Qie Zhi Bag is similar to the nets used by fishermen, hence the name; while Koreans currently refer to it as "Taiwan Jeontong Gabang," meaning traditional Taiwanese bag. In English, it is named "KA-TSI," based on its Taiwanese pronunciation. Regardless of its name, the Qie Zhi Bag has always played a humble and practical role in the daily lives of Taiwanese people as a common item.
