There has long been debate about what the proper name for this iconic Taiwanese bag should be. Currently, most government agencies and private organizations in Taiwan use the term “Qiezi Bag” as the standard name. However, some online discussions have suggested that the original and correct name should be “Jiā-jǔ (葭苴)”. The character “葭” refers to young reed plants, and “苴” refers to straw mats once used as inner soles in ancient footwear—both closely related to the bag’s original material: rush grass (蘭草). In contrast, the name “Qiezi” (茄芷) is likely a phonetic reinterpretation, chosen for ease of reading and writing.
Abroad, the Japanese refer to the Qiezi bag as “漁師バッグ” ("Fisherman's Bag"), due to its resemblance to the nets used by fishermen. In Korea, it's known as “대만 전통 가방”, meaning “Traditional Taiwanese Bag.”
In English, it’s often romanized as “KA-TSI,” following the Taiwanese pronunciation.
Regardless of its name, the Qiezi bag has long played a quiet, practical role in the everyday lives of Taiwanese people.
The bag’s origin traces back to Wumiler Community in Houbi, Tainan, a rural village that gained fame through the documentary Wumiler. This documentary not only revitalized tourism in the region but also breathed new life into the red, blue, and green Qiezi bags through the work of Grandma Qiezi Workshop, which uses local elements to elevate community culture and preserve this humble yet iconic tradition.
